English was the official language of Hong Kong during the colonial period. It was not until 1974 that Chinese became the official language of Hong Kong and enjoyed the same legal status as English. In 1972, Chung Shi-yuan became the first member to speak Chinese in the Legislative Council.
After China took back the governance of Hong Kong, Mandarin gradually became the third most popular language, and even simplified Mandarin characters can be used as official texts in some government documents.
